This residency explored the roles and identities that perpetuate violence against women, a realization after an earlier experience painting about female foeticide that our engagement with the issue of violence against women needed to go deeper and broader. The goal of the workshop was not just to identify the causes of the violence, but to explore a vision of manhood and womanhood that not just prevents violence but champions women’s dignity and healthy life-giving relationships between men and women. This year our goal of bringing together artists who share a love for art and the dignity of human life resulted not only in 12 painters meeting but also a small film team that conceptualized, scripted, and shot a short-film on the issue. We were grateful to a team of street-theatre artists from the JNU Gender Sensitization Committee that put on a street play to stimulate the artists. The resulting work was exhibited at Reflection Art Gallery in February 2009 with chief guest H'ble Health Minister of Delhi Prof. Kiran Wallia opening the exhibition and writer-activist Madhu Kishwar as special guest.
