Art for Change Foundation since its conception in 2008, has been taking art to some of New Delhi's most marginalized. Our most recent collaborative project, ‘Art Beyond Barriers’ (2021) with SAMADHAN comes as a natural progression in our Made to Create program.
Soon after the first nation-wide lockdown in 2020, we started seeking virtual avenues for our art residency programs. Having multiple conversations with our friends and partners, in September-October 2020 we had our first Virtual Residency, 42 artists took part, the theme was ‘Mental Health: Everybody Deserves to Have Their Story Heard’. It was serendipitous that the founder of SAMADHAN was one of the participants.
Our meet with Pramila ji opened an opportunity for collaboration. In the coming months we would find space in SAMADHAN’s building in Dwarka to set up our new studio space. SAMADHAN, registered in 1981, is an NGO with dual focus on persons with intellectual disability also impacted by poverty in New Delhi, Service models have been developed to suit the characteristics of low socio economic target communities and today provide community outreach for raising awareness on intellectual disability, advocacy in local mainstream schools, therapy, special education and early intervention. See more about SAMADHAN at https://www.samadhanindia.org/about-us.html
As part of the collaboration, we have developed the ‘Art Beyond Barriers’ Project, a project that utilizes our skills to hold art workshops, skill building trainings and residency programs to develop art based learning programs for special needs children.
