Two stereotypes about artists found traction as the world went into lockdown. Artists can handle being alone and that they can express themselves easily.
Typically artists do spend a lot of time on their own, so when the lockdown began it appeared as if we were well prepared to handle it. But artists do not exist in a vacuum, so it was just a matter of time before the novelty wore off and we had to admit our need for each other, if not platonically then for practical purpose.
While the online support and communication have helped in keeping us in a virtual community, for many the uncertainty regarding the future is taking a toll
I have painted a dozen paintings and sketched almost daily on the theme of ‘burning boat’. It is a continuation from my previous series about being in ‘liminal space’ or a waiting room. About the inability to go back to the familiar nor knowing where to go next.
This year it was as though the boat was not just rocked but set ablaze. Talking to someone about how I am doing was like stepping out of the boat and walking on water.
As artists we are familiar with confessing online, being vulnerable and authentic in our work. But during this global upheaval we must go beyond creative expression and productivity.
Who knows which stereotypes will remain and which new ones will emerge. I hope for clarity and courage to continue pursuing my call as an artist as I process my inner life with someone else.
